Traditional Intraocular lenses target distance vision correction. With increasing demands of individuals desiring spectacle independence, we now have a variety of IOLs to cater to the near and intermediate vision requirements of our patients. The newest IOLs on the block are the extended depth of focus IOLs which aim at correcting the patient for distance (>100 cm) and intermediate (50-80cms) vision requirements.

A few examples of these EDOFs (Extended depth of focus IOLs ) are the Alcon Vivity IOL, Tecnis Eyhance IOL, Zeiss AT LARA. These IOLs are slightly different from Trifocal IOLs in the context that while trifocals aim at correcting near, intermediate and distance vision, the EDOFs (Extended depth of focus IOLs) primarily are designed to correct the distance and intermediate vision.

EDoF IOLs can help patients perform a broad spectrum of activities without spectacles , including sports, socializing, cleaning, cooking, shopping and other typical home and garden tasks, also working on the computer, watching TV or driving a car. Near activities needing greater precision or reading fine print may require the use of glasses.

These are specially suitable for patients who spend greater work hours on computer usage, allowing spectacle freedom while reducing the visual side effects of trifocal IOLs at the same time.

The extended depth of focus IOLs are premium Intraocular Lenses, that represent advanced IOL technology. These IOLs allow you to be corrected for distance (>100cms) and intermediate vision (50-80 cms).

They combine the advantages of the traditional monofocal and multifocal IOLs, thereby providing freedom from glasses and fewer visual side effects at the same time.

A few examples of these EDOFs (Extended depth of focus IOLs ) are the AcrySoF IQ Vivity IOL (Alcon), Tecnis Eyhance IOL (Johnson and Johnson Vision), Zeiss AT LARA.

These IOLS allow spectacle freedom while reducing the visual side effects of trifocal IOLs like glare and haloes at the same time. Patients with EDoF lenses usually enjoy good night vision, which is particularly important for night driving.
