Children, unlike adults, need special care and attention when it comes to eye examination. Paediatric ophthalmology and squint fellowship at Narayana Nethralaya is focused on training young ophthalmologists in comprehensive evaluation of children as well as providing a wide range of clinical exposure in Paediatric and adult strabismus. Fellows are given ample opportunities to observe and learn clinical management of patients in outpatient clinics. Trainees are also given opportunities to individually handle patients and actively take part in allied clinics like Orthoptic and CVI (Cortical visual impairment) clinic. The institute also has a Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) Screening programme.
Narayana Nethralaya has the finest wet lab facilities for trainees, which are well supervised. Simulator-based training is also provided to improve hand-eye coordination. Trainees initially get to observe and assist with surgeries. Independent surgical opportunities depend on individual skill as determined by the mentor or the attending surgeon. The objective is to coach the young ophthalmologist to become a highly ethical and skilled surgeon.
Academic activities include case-based discussions in clinics, Seminars and presentations, keeping the trainees not just intellectually occupied but also helping to keep their clinical acumen sharp. Fellows also get an opportunity to present their research at various national and international podiums.

Exposure to the basics of electrophysiological tests like ERG, EOG & VEP.
The candidate will be trained in all simple & complicated strabismus surgeries, pediatric cataracts, lid surgeries, probing & syringing.
Fellows also undertake emergency day and night duties, which help them learn management of ophthalmic emergencies.
Every week, interesting and important cases will be discussed. Learning by the case study approach is a well-established method of training, and fellows will be strongly encouraged to discuss cases with the mentors regularly.
Narayana Nethralaya has a strong and growing research team. Fellows are strongly encouraged to work with faculty in producing good-quality research, and they are encouraged to present and publish such papers. One paper presentation or a journal article submission is required for course completion.
