Silk Laser Eye Surgery

Rediscover life in High Definition

Laser refractive surgery can reduce your dependence on prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses, and allow you to lead a more active life. SILK, or “Small Incision Lenticule Keratomileusis,” is the latest type of laser treatment for eyes that can give you specs-free clear vision within a matter of days.

What Is SILK Laser Eye Surgery?

The ELITA Platform, developed by Johnson & Johnson, was granted the CE Mark approval in March of 2023. It is an advanced technology that addresses myopia, with or without astigmatism, through a lenticular extraction procedure known as Smooth Incision Lenticule Keratomileusis (SILK). The ELITA Platform utilizes an ultra-precise, low-energy laser pulse, and fast laser delivery system to provide surgeons with a consistently smooth and easy lenticular removal, delivering exceptional results the very next day of the surgery.

The precise ELITA Femtosecond Laser creates a small, disc-shaped “lenticule” in the cornea using fine laser pulses after the eye is numbed. The lenticule is then delicately removed through a 2-3mm incision. The smooth lenticule removal reshapes the cornea, resulting in flawless vision. The biconvex shape of the lenticule in the ELITA Platform is a first in the industry, with positive implications for wound healing and nerve regeneration after surgery.

SILK Laser Vision Correction Age Limit

Silk laser eye surgery is suitable for adults 22 years of age or older with mild to moderate near-sightedness (up to 10 D of myopia) and astigmatism (up to 5 D).

WHAT’S UNIQUE?

Benefits Of SILK Laser Treatment For Eyes Includes

The ultra precise, low energy and fast laser delivery system ensures precise cuts with no collateral damage. This helps the surgeon in smooth dissection and lenticule extraction which ensure clear vision the very next day of the surgery.

SILK is a lenticular extraction procedure involving a maximum of 3 mm cut on the cornea. This results in a biomechanically stronger cornea, post-surgery. Thus, SILK is an ideal laser eye surgery for athletes and those in active sports.

The cyclotorsion component ensures more accurate treatment, especially of the cylindrical power (astigmatism).

The unique biconvex shape of the lenticule reduces cutting of corneal nerves and provides faster nerve regeneration for a healthy ocular surface. It also has a positive impact on the long-term quality of vision.

SILK Laser Eye Surgery Procedure

The refractive surgeon conducts a detailed refraction and comprehensive ocular examination on the patient. Subsequently, a series of preoperative tests are performed including corneal topography, which measures the curvature and thickness of the cornea. An advanced retinal fundus evaluation test is also performed. These tests help to determine if the patient’s eye is eligible for laser vision correction and whether ELITA SILK eye surgery is suitable.

On the day of the laser eye surgery procedure, after the patient gives consent for the procedure, he/she is shifted to the Operation Theatre. After instillation of anaesthetic eye drops, ELITA’s ultra-precise, low energy, and fast laser delivery system is used to dispense femtosecond pulses to create the biconvex lenticule. The lenticule is then carefully dissected by the surgeon and gently extracted from the microscopic 2-3 mm size incision.

After the procedure, the patient is able to return home within 30 minutes. They receive personalized counselling to explain the post-operative medications and precautions in detail. Eye drops are prescribed to prevent infection and aid in the healing process. The patient is scheduled for a post-operative check-up on the first day and one month later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Unlike LASIK (which creates a flap) or SMILE (which extracts the lenticule through a small incision), SILK uses a smoother, flapless technique with potentially faster recovery and reduced dry eye risk.

SILK is best for those with:
✔ Stable myopia (nearsightedness)
✔ Mild to moderate astigmatism
✔ Healthy corneas (no thinness or irregularities)
A detailed and comprehensive evaluation at our centres will help determine your eligibility for SILK.

Most patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. Numbing drops are used, and any mild irritation typically resolves within hours.

Many resume normal activities within 24-48 hours, though full visual stabilization may take 1-2 weeks. Avoid rubbing your eyes and swimming for 1-2 weeks.
